Mix it up

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Its time to mix it up ladies! All those rules that you were once told to follow are starting to change. You know the rules...no white before Easter; don't wear black with blue; don't mix patterns...STOP! Mixing patterns can be so easy and is a great way to keep your look fresh and new. We know, its scary and probably feels a little awkward but we are here to help!

DO stay in the same color family. You are portraying a look, not representing your whole wardrobe.

Above are great example on how each look mixed patterns but all stayed in the same color family so they could be tied together.

DO start small, try pairing a printed scarf with a patterned top that you normally pair with a solid top.

DO combine different patterns that don't compete with each other. Two large print patterns will clash and overwhelm. Try pairing a striped top with a patterned skirt like option 1 below.

DO watch your proportions.  A tailored bottom with a flowy top or a tailored top with a full skirt works well. Make sure that you are balanced with a tailored item so that you do not look like you have patterned fabric laying all over you!

DON'T overdo the jewelry. The outfit will be a statement in itself so minimize the accessories.

DON'T be afraid to break up with a solid. Throw a belt over that dress to accentuate the waist and block off the pattern.

What do you think? Will you be brave enough to try this look? If so, let us know, send in a picture and see yourself on our blog!
