bathing suit roundup

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

It's that time again ladies.  The dreaded bathing suit season is upon us.  We know that most of you are a little self-conscious when it comes to striping down and sporting minimal fabric.  Fear not.  We are rounding up our best tips and tricks so you can look your best in your swimsuits.

Tummy Coverage
Whether you are looking for some serious coverage or just a little bit to prevent the dreaded muffin-top, keep these tips in mind.  Bottoms that are low-rise and cut straight across your tummy are not your friend.  Try bottoms that tie on the sides.  While this may seem counter productive as it usually means less fabric, it allows you to adjust and tie as tight or loose as you need to so the muffin-top is avoided.  There is a lot of new technology out there if you are looking to be sucked in.  Spanx (a Jilly Moo's undergarmet fav) now has bathing suits.  Similar styles are available at places such as Victoria's Secret or Lands End.  Ruching is also a visual trick to slim down.  If you don't want a one piece, a higher waisted bottom will suck you in as well.

Full Bust
Forget the string tops if you are blessed up top.  You will be sagging and falling out all over the place.  Go for a top that will give you some support and coverage.  Intimacy lets you buy your bathing suit based on bra size and goes all the way up to a size K!  Otherwise look for tops that have a thicker band below your chest to give a little more support or ones that have a built-in support structure (i.e. wire, padding, etc).  Halter tops with wide straps are generally a smart pick as well.

Long Torso
This can be a struggle for those tall gals who don't want to be forced to wear a bikini.  Eddie Bauer offers swimsuits in long torso sizes as does JCPenny.  If you are looking for additional coverage, you can also go the route of the tankini:  perfect for those who are have a long torso but still want a little more coverage than a bikini offers.
Wireless Push-Up Tankini $44.50 and Side Tie Scoop Bottoms $28.50 at Victoria's Secret
Small Bust
Look for tops that have embellishment such as ruffles, ruching, sequins, and patterns.  You gals who are smaller up top can get away with wearing a bandeau top, triangle top,or a top with less coverage because you don't have to deal with sagging.  If you are smaller up top and wider on the bottom (pear shaped), try wearing a solid dark bottom and a patterned top.  This illusion will draw the eye up and take the focus off the hips.

Can't they come out with a bathing suit that starts at my neck line and ends around 3 inches above my knees? :)
