the boyfriend jean

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

We got a great question from a Jilly Moo's reader who just purchased a pair of boyfriend jeans and wants to know how the heck to wear them.  They can be a little daunting and aren't for everyone but worn the right way, can be so cute (those who have seen us around town know what fans we are of ours).  Firstly, there are several versions of the boyfriend jean.  The true boyfriend jean literally looks like you are wearing a pair of your hubby/boyfriend's pants:  pretty baggy, generally a mid to light wash, often distressed and cuffed at the bottom.

Current/Elliott Super Loved Boyfriend Jeans  (a celeb favorite)  $245

For those not looking for the baggy look, you can wear a more fitted boyfriend jean such as these by Gap.  Anything much tighter and they aren't technically considered "boyfriend jeans".

Easy Straight Deconstructed Jeans $69.50

So onto how to wear them.  They can be worn in most any way that you can think up.  We love tossing them on to run errands or to take the kids to soccer practice a la Victoria Beckham and Reese Witherspoon.  A tee, cardigan and ballet flat or gladiator sandal are all you need.

You can step it up a little for meeting the girls for lunch or doing a little shopping by adding a blazer, scarf, or casual, chunky heals like Rachel Bilson and Jessica Alba.

You can even dress them up for a night out but we caution you that this could go terribly, terribly wrong!  Use caution here and still keep casual ease in the back of your mind.  Follow Zoe Saldana's lead.

When in doubt, follow these general rules:

- Due to the boyfriend jean's bagginess, wear a more fitted top.  Loose clothing all over just looks sloppy.
- Since these have a masculine feel, so we like to balance ours out by pairing them with something a little more girly.
- Keep casualness in mind.  This is defiantly a weekend look so don't try to wear these to the office!
- No sneakers.  Although these are "boyfriend jeans" you don't want to literally look like your boyfriend.

TREND ALERT!  Come Spring/Summer look for versions of the boyfriend jean in shorts form.  We've already spotted these:

Abercrombie and Fitch Sarah Shorts $58
