revamp your "mom uniform"

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

We have gotten several comments from readers who say they feel like they have fallen into the typical "mom outfit" of yoga pants, t-shirt and ponytail.  They say they just need a total makeover.  We will fess up.  If we are at home, you will find us in this very same uniform.  It's comfy and easy but not so easy on the eyes.  While we can't pull a Stacy London and come knocking on doors to hand out free make-overs, we can give some of our best advice on how to step up your daily look while still being comfortable and without too much effort.

One of our favorite Celb Mom's is Jessica Alba.  She is the perfect example of how you can keep it practical but still have style!  How easy is it to throw on a comfy dress?  Add one timeless piece (here, a jean jacket) and one trendy piece (her great fringe sandals) and you look great.

DO
-Stay Comfy:  Just because you are taking it up a notch doesn't mean you have to compromise comfort.  If you love a t-shirt, wear a t-shirt!  Try a more interesting tee with pattern or fun embellishment.  Some of our current favorite comfy items are boyfriend shorts and jeans, loose tunics, t-shirts and tanks, ballet flats, and gladiator sandals.
-Use Your Accessories:  Accessories, particularly shoes, can make or break an outfit.  Use them wisely!  While we do love our flip-flops, we feel they are generally over used.  We encourage you to break out of the box and try something new.  It could be a gladiator sandal, thong sandal or ballet flat.  Adding a cool necklace or scarf around the neck, several bracelets on your arm, or a cool belt can add a little something to an otherwise boring outfit.

DON'T
-Be Sloppy:  Comfort doesn't have to equal sloppy.  Leave the boxy shapeless t-shirt with the holes in it at home (on second thought, just toss it).
-Loose Yourself:  Trying to wear items that are too trendy if you are a simple gal will often come across as trying too hard.  Be yourself and keep your own style.  Are you a classic American gal?  Try a chambray button down, chino shorts, and simple jewelry.  Feeling California casual?  Go for a flowy sundress, strappy flat sandals, and a hobo bag.  A little more rocker?  A t-shirt with your favorite band, a cool belt and hat will look great on you.

It really doesn't have to be complicated.  Don't over think it.  Use some of these simple outfits that you can recreate yourself as inspiration.
