look for less: kourtney kardashian

Friday, April 30, 2010

How do you feel about the high waisted short?  We love Kourtney Kardashian's response to critics who say it looks like she is wearing "mom shorts"... "I have heard some people say I look like a 'mom', well guess what honey, I am a mom!"  She keeps her's age appropriate with the length but gives them a little edge with her funky wedges.

Date Night with Jilly Moo's

Next event up...Date Night!!!  Whether you are newly married, just had a baby, or busy with kiddos schedules, it's always important to carve some time out for you and the hubby.  The objective of this night should be to have fun and NOT discuss kids, money, or work!  Tough I know, but its about reconnecting and having fun and your attire should reflect that.  We gave this task to 2 moms that are in a little different life stage of right now.  A new mom who works part time and a busy stay at home mom of 2 who both need some time with their hubbies!
Jessica:  First off, her figure is out of this world.  To be this skinny with a less than 1 year old should be a sin!  We love her anyway; even though we are green with envy.  Jessica is a minimalist.  She likes the latest and greatest but she also likes to keep it simple.  We tried to shake that out of her.

BEFORE:

It was small but BIG changes that the camera may have not picked up. The jean was the first thing we switched.  The fit of a jean is the most important and length was our issue with Jessica's jean.  We swapped them for one of our favorite jeans JBrand Ankle Skinny Jeans.

We decided that the scarf was too casual and covered up her rockin' figure (this is a night out with the hubby after all!) so instead we added a little color with a Silpada necklace and Adornement Jewelry by Design bracelets and voila...she was ready!

AFTER:

Megan: Is a busy mom of two...deserving of a night out with the hubby!  Meg has been asking for Jilly Moo's help with her closet (we help organize your wardrobe: what to keep, what to throw out, show how to wear your clothes different ways, and help with buying the must-haves!) and we are going to help and hopefully have the results posted soon!  Stay tuned!  She purchased this Ella Moss dress (that we loved!).  We just made a few touches to make it a little more fun and lets face it sexy (its for the hubby after all)...

BEFORE:

AFTER:

With a change of the shoe, accessories and a quick hair change she was ready!  By swapping the casual wedges for a dressier heel and pulling the hair back to show off the one shoulder she transformed her "going to lunch with the girls" to "watch out hubby...here I come!"  (Shoes and earrings were compliments of Moo's closet).

revamp your "mom uniform"

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

We have gotten several comments from readers who say they feel like they have fallen into the typical "mom outfit" of yoga pants, t-shirt and ponytail.  They say they just need a total makeover.  We will fess up.  If we are at home, you will find us in this very same uniform.  It's comfy and easy but not so easy on the eyes.  While we can't pull a Stacy London and come knocking on doors to hand out free make-overs, we can give some of our best advice on how to step up your daily look while still being comfortable and without too much effort.

One of our favorite Celb Mom's is Jessica Alba.  She is the perfect example of how you can keep it practical but still have style!  How easy is it to throw on a comfy dress?  Add one timeless piece (here, a jean jacket) and one trendy piece (her great fringe sandals) and you look great.

DO
-Stay Comfy:  Just because you are taking it up a notch doesn't mean you have to compromise comfort.  If you love a t-shirt, wear a t-shirt!  Try a more interesting tee with pattern or fun embellishment.  Some of our current favorite comfy items are boyfriend shorts and jeans, loose tunics, t-shirts and tanks, ballet flats, and gladiator sandals.
-Use Your Accessories:  Accessories, particularly shoes, can make or break an outfit.  Use them wisely!  While we do love our flip-flops, we feel they are generally over used.  We encourage you to break out of the box and try something new.  It could be a gladiator sandal, thong sandal or ballet flat.  Adding a cool necklace or scarf around the neck, several bracelets on your arm, or a cool belt can add a little something to an otherwise boring outfit.

DON'T
-Be Sloppy:  Comfort doesn't have to equal sloppy.  Leave the boxy shapeless t-shirt with the holes in it at home (on second thought, just toss it).
-Loose Yourself:  Trying to wear items that are too trendy if you are a simple gal will often come across as trying too hard.  Be yourself and keep your own style.  Are you a classic American gal?  Try a chambray button down, chino shorts, and simple jewelry.  Feeling California casual?  Go for a flowy sundress, strappy flat sandals, and a hobo bag.  A little more rocker?  A t-shirt with your favorite band, a cool belt and hat will look great on you.

It really doesn't have to be complicated.  Don't over think it.  Use some of these simple outfits that you can recreate yourself as inspiration.

Girls Night Out with Jilly Moo's!

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

So we hatched a plan...gather our "girls"and ask them to dress in an outfit for an event that we assign them.  We then put our Jilly Moo's touch on it using only with what they brought and what we had laying around, sharing with them what works and what maybe not so much.  We have really good friends!  Don't worry, we enticed them with food and wine.  We had a great group so we are going to show you a little at a time.  First up...Girls Night Out!

Jillayne: Young, single and so much fun...Jillayne was a blast! She is outgoing and funny and we felt her clothes needed to match her personality...

BEFORE

AFTER

Adding the belt and fedora changed the look of this dress:  fun, youthful and more "Jillayne"!

Katie:  Mama of 2 toddlers (would have never guessed would you?) and like all of us mama's, needs a night with the girls! We thought it would be fun to give her this event because sometimes it's hard for us mom's to get a night out and even harder to know what to wear!

BEFORE

AFTER:
Katie kept it simple but fun, with the change of her hair and slight change in accessories she was able to perfect her GNO look while still sticking to her own personal style.

spring clean your makeup

Just as you Spring clean your house or your closet, now is a good time to think about doing a Spring clean of your makeup.  We are guilty too:  we often neglect this area and forget that makeup goes bad and needs to be tossed.  Gather up ALL of your makeup and paraphernalia and get ready to weed out and organize. Here are some general guidelines from one of our favorite makeup gurus, Bobbi Brown.

  • Face Wash                  1 year
  • Moisturizer                  1 year
  • Foundation                  1 - 1.5 years
  • Lipstick                       1 - 2 years
  • Mascara                      3 - 4 months
  • Powder                       2 years
  • Eye Shadow                2 years

*Remember to wash your makeup brushes every 2 - 3 months and toss your sponges monthly.*

Throw out any brushes or sponges that are falling apart.
Get rid of anything you haven't used in six months or more.  It's tough but buckle down and move on.
If there is any liquid that has separated or smells funny, toss it.  Sometimes it's just common sense, girls.

It's a good time to get organized while you have your makeup out.  Check out these ways you can store your makeup.

Classic Makeup Sectionals $69 - $79 at Pottery Barn Teen

Acrylic Makeup Organizers $17.99 at The Container Store

Store yours in drawers like these.   Sterilite 3 Drawer Chest $10.74 at Stacks and Stackables
The mac daddy of storage:  Midnight Train Case $92 at Sephora

Backpacks for Spring

Friday, April 23, 2010

College students rejoice!  Backpacks are back.  These aren't the tiny backpacks of the 90's but full-on actual backpacks.  We still aren't quite sure about this trend.  We've always been a little leery about carrying our cash in a bag on our backs for whoever to take (call us paranoid).  Plus it seems a little overboard...do we really need a giant bag for all of our stuff?  We aren't treking across the Sahara, we are going to the grocery store.  That being said, Rachel Bilson looks pretty darn cute with her boho-chic bag at Coachella music festival.

Our Fav Green Guy
Jonathan Merritt is the author of the thought provoking book Green Like God and our first street style subject!  He combines his great sense of style with his passion for God and ties it together in his strong belief for "unlocking the divine plan for our planet" which all together equals our favorite green guy! Let us reassure you, he is the real deal.  We met him for coffee back in January and he brought his own cup for them to fill to avoid the dreaded styrofoam cup.  He definitely practices what he preaches!  It was a great morning of coffee and conversation which gave us the chance to ask him some questions on his style choices (after all we are a fashion blog).  After reading his book, we can see that he is true to his word.  The book will take you on  a journey which ends with you reinventing your lifestyle...trade convenience for conviction!  We love a guy that not only knows how to dress but understands that its not all about labels (hence our issue with Ed Hardy attire!).  Great heart, great book, great guy!

What are you wearing today?
"My favorite jacket which is by For You.  I like it because it is affordable at only $60 but it is still well made.  I got it at an awesome store, Little Bohemia in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Where is your favorite place to shop?
"Nordstrom Rack.  The clearance section is the best because you can find gems."

What is important to you when you are looking for clothes?
"Durability.  A lot of people don't know that cheap is not better.  I still have a pair of Seven's from high school that fit great!  Certain items of clothing are investments.  I try to get classic, durable clothes that will last a lifetime.  I would rather buy an expensive pair of jeans that last forever rather than a cheap pair that I will have to buy 5 times over.  Now in the 21st century, people design things to break so you have to continue to buy it over and over.  It is nice that there are designers still out there that make quality, durable pieces."

how to wear a slouchy tee

One of our most favorite items is a t-shirt.  There is nothing more comfortable.  Even more comfortable?  One that is loose-fitting.  While this may seem hard to pull off, it can be super easy and even very versatile when styled different ways.  Follow these tips to get your best look.

- Go surfer-girl by throwing yours on with jeans and sandals.  Add on some cool jewelry like Vanessa Hudgens' feather earrings.  If yours is see through, super baggy, or low-cut, layer yours over a tank.

- Dress yours up.  Try rolling up the sleeves and tucking yours into a skirt like Gwyneth did.  So unexpected but such a cool dressed up-rocker vibe.

- Layer!  To keep the volume in check, put a cardigan or vest over yours.  While thinking of proportions, remember that as a general rule, if you are baggy up top keep it narrow on the bottom as Siena Miller did in her skinny jeans.

- Wear one as a tunic.  If the t-shirt is long enough (covers your bootie), pair it with leggings and ballet flats or heals like Lauren Conrad did.

Here are some to try:

C&C California Slub Tee $58 at Revolve Clothing

Striped Drop Shoulder T-Shirt $17.50 at American Eagle

Frenchi Boyfriend Tee $20 at Nordstom

Wanna go super cheep?  Grab a pack of men's t-shirts for a slouch look.  Keep in mind that they won't be cut like women's tees are but they are a good option if you wanna save some cash.

Hanes Men's V-Neck Tee $11 for pk of 6 Hanes
